What Can Spider Vein Treatments Do for You?

Man's legs running on treadmill overlooking a city view

Spider vein treatments can remove those pesky little bluish-purple veins on your legs that look like threads or spider webs. They are generally undesirable and sometimes uncomfortable, but we offer several effective treatments that get rid of them completely. There is no need to continue feeling embarrassed by spider veins on your legs every summer.

Spider Vein Treatments

Sclerotherapy is considered one of the best treatments to remove spider veins. For this treatment, our vein specialist injects a solution directly into the spider vein to irritate the vein wall and make the vein close. The procedure is done in our offices. You may need more than one treatment on some larger spider veins. After a few weeks, the veins fade and disappear.

How Do Spider Veins Form?

There are a number of reasons spider veins may form on your legs. The most common is heredity. If a member of your family has spider veins, there is a good chance you will too. Hormonal shifts are another common cause, which is prevalent in women. Spider veins may form during pregnancy and menopause. Men and women may develop spider veins if they have major weight fluctuations, trauma or injury to the legs and occupations in which they sit or stand for long periods of time.

Who is a Good Candidate for Spider Vein Treatment?

If you have spider veins anywhere on your body that bother you because of their appearance or because they cause itching or swelling, you may be a good candidate to get rid of them. You will need to follow our specialist’s instructions for before and after care to get the best results. When you meet our vein specialist, you can ask questions and learn about realistic expectations for treatment of your spider veins.

During your consultation, your veins will be examined in detail. We will ask you about your medical history, illnesses and medications you take. We may also need to make sure spider veins are your only problem and that you don’t have any deep vein issues. Some signs that there are problems under the skin are ankle swelling, skin color changes around the ankles, sores that don’t heal quickly on the lower leg and swelling.
