Learn More About Sclerotherapy

If you have unsightly or even painful veins, there are many options available that are safe and effective. At Pacific Vein Care we offer both large and small vein sclerotherapy treatments. Whether you want treatment solely for cosmetic reasons, or your veins are causing you pain and discomfort, sclerotherapy is an effective treatment for most situations.

How Does Sclerotherapy Work?

In simplest terms, sclerotherapy is a treatment technique where a clear solution is injected into the veins. As a result of the injection, the vein swells and eventually seal off the flow of blood which stops blood from entering that section of the vein. The procedure is safe and does not take very much time at all. In some cases, multiple injections may be required to fully treat the problem. You may experience temporary bruising, and it may take up to a week or more for the vein to completely disappear.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Prior to any injections or sclerotherapy occurring, your doctor will conduct a complete review of your medical history and that of your immediate family. An ultrasound will also be conducted to rule out any other medical conditions or factors that may be causing swelling of the veins. If you are taking any medications that are known to cause a high degree of bruising or bleeding, your doctor will likely have you stop taking them until after the sclerotherapy is completed. During your consultation, you will have the opportunity to ask any questions that you may have and raise any concerns that are affecting you.

Recovering from Sclerotherapy

Once your treatment is complete, your leg, or other affected area, will be securely wrapped in compression bandages. It is important that all post-op procedures be followed once you are home. Twenty-four hours after your procedure you will need to wear compression stockings in order to reduce the likelihood of complications. These stockings are typically worn for two to three weeks, and it is imperative that you continue to wear them until you are instructed that it is no longer necessary. There is little to no downtime and once you leave the doctor’s office you can continue on your day as you normally do.
