Is It Too Late for Vein Treatment?

Are you dealing with unsightly varicose veins? These dysfunctional blood vessels are most common in those who elderly or overweight. Even though they may not cause symptoms, you may consider them to be a cosmetic concern worthy of treatment. The good news is that you have some vein treatment options for removing troublesome veins.

Varicose Veins and Spider Veins

A varicose vein is a dysfunctional blood vessel with a faulty one-way valve. Veins are responsible for transporting blood back to your heart to be re-oxygenated. The valves normally allow blood to flow in only one direction. Varicose veins are dysfunctional blood vessels that cannot prevent the backflow of blood into them. This causes their bulging and twisted appearance.

A spider vein is a smaller version of the varicose vein that appears somewhat differently. Instead of being blue or green in color, spider veins tend to be red or purple. Spider veins are also branched in appearance or have a spider web shape.

Sclerotherapy Vein Treatment

A sclerotherapy procedure can remove varicose veins using a technique that has been around for many decades. We use a needle to inject a special solution into the dysfunctional vein, causing its collapse. Your body will absorb the destroyed blood vessel, and the blood it contained will find its way back to your heart using other, properly functioning veins.

Don’t expect a lengthy recovery after your sclerotherapy procedure. You should be able to walk immediately after your treatment, but you should take it easy for a couple of days. You will likely need to wear a compression garment after your sclerotherapy procedure to retain vein pressure, preventing blood from returning when you stand up.

Endovenous Ablation

Endovenous ablation is a more modern technique for removing varicose and spider veins, relying upon radiofrequency energy rather than a chemical solution. We use a laser to transmit focused light wavelengths into the walls of the dysfunctional vein. As with sclerotherapy, this destroys the vein, which is absorbed by your body in time. Any blood that once flowed through the treated vein will be taken up by neighboring blood vessels that are functioning properly.
