Dealing with Common Vein Issues

If you take a look at your legs, arms, and other areas of your body, you might notice that your veins look at bit odd at times. If you notice that some of them look like a web, then you likely have spider veins. Sometimes, veins can cause pain if they are swollen or if there isn’t proper blood flow through them. Understanding common vein issues can help you better prepare for treating them and preventing them from occurring.

Varicose veins are one of the common vein issues found in many people, especially in women. When the small valves in the veins fail and don’t allow blood to flow like it should to the heart, then you might notice web-like designs just underneath your skin. Most of the time, these are harmless and usually impact your self-esteem more than your health. The valves in the veins in your legs work to prevent blood from flowing back into the veins, and when the valves are damaged, this backflow issue results in blood that pools. Most of the time, varicose veins are commonly seen in families and those who are overweight. If you don’t move around a lot during the day or if you stand in one place for long periods of time, then you will usually notice varicose veins more than someone who is active. Weight loss, compression stockings, and movement are some of the treatments that can help in preventing and dealing with this vein issue.

Another common vein issue is chronic venous insufficiency. This occurs when there is drainage deeper inside your limbs instead of just at the surface. There is usually some kind of obstruction that prevents proper blood flow from your limbs to your heart. A clot in a vein is one of the most common causes of this issue. You’ll usually notice swelling as well as pain and darker skin in the area impacted. Sometimes, you might experience a burning sensation or itching, but these symptoms are usually minimal.

A pulmonary embolism is one of the common vein issues that is associated with deep vein thrombosis. The blood clot in the vein will break away and begin to travel to your lungs. If this occurs, then you will usually notice a decrease in oxygen levels as well as pain in your chest. Immobility for an extended period of time can result in a pulmonary embolism.
