For many people, as they age they begin to develop a condition known as varicose veins. This can be embarrassing as the veins take on an unsightly appearance and detract from general physical attractiveness, which can be an issue for many. At Pacific Vein Care, treatments for varicose veins, such as sclerotherapy, will return the appearance of areas affected by varicose veins to their normal state.
Facts About Sclerotherapy
Developed in the 1950s and 1960s as a technique to treat spider and varicose veins, sclerotherapy is hailed as a cost-effective and desirable solution. When a patient is treated with sclerotherapy, a small, fine needle is used to inject a diluted solution directly into both large veins and spider veins. The solution used for typical sclerotherapy treatments contains a compound known as polidocanol as it is effective and virtually painless.
When sclerotherapy is performed, the affected area is first cleansed and made sterile with an alcohol solution. After the area is clean small amounts of sclerosing (or hardening) solutions are injected directly into the veins. Veins will typically disappear, reemerge, and then over time return to a state where they are no longer noticeable.
Before sclerotherapy is performed, a complete medical history is compiled and analysis is carried out to determine causes, assessments are made to determine if pre-existing conditions are contributing to the varicose veins and if any symptoms being experienced are associated with the condition.
In some cases, ultrasound may be used to treat cases with larger varicose veins that are present in conjunction with spider veins. For those instances where spider veins are found where larger varicose veins are present, a procedure known as Radiofrequency Ablation System is performed before a sclerotherapy procedure is undertaken.
Outcomes for Patients
Most cases of varicose or spider veins that are treated with sclerotherapy are successful and the veins disappear within several weeks. Sometimes several treatments are required to make the veins completely disappear. In many cases, patients will also need to wear what are known as compression stockings for up to 14 days as part of the treatment.
