The Benefits of Endovenous Ablation

Close-up of a pair of female feet in high-heeled pink pumps

Endovenous ablation is the treatment for venous insufficiency that has many advantages over surgery. It is minimally-invasive and uses laser light waves to destroy the varicose vein from the inside. If you suffer from the embarrassment of varicose veins on your legs, or if they cause you pain and discomfort, we offer a remedy that may let you have smooth legs again.

How Does Endovenous Ablation Work

Endovenous ablation means heat is used inside the vein to destroy it. A tiny catheter is passed through the affected vein and the thin laser fiber is passed through the catheter. When the laser is turned on, the tip is slowly pulled along the vein damaging the vein wall with the laser light and causing it to collapse. The incision is so tiny that no stitches are needed. Once the vein is destroyed, the blood will find its way through healthy veins. After a few weeks or months, depending on the size of the vein, it is absorbed by the surrounding tissue and eliminated from the body.

In some cases, we may do a second procedure called an ambulatory microphlebectomy in which a tiny nick is made and the damaged vein is removed. There are several important benefits of endovenous ablation, including:

• No sedation or general anesthesia is required but a local anesthetic may be applied
• There is no surgical incisions or visible scars
• The success rate is 93-97 percent
• The treatment is safe
• You can walk and continue with your normal daily activities within 24 hours

How to Prepare for Endovenous Ablation Treatment

When you meet our specialist and your varicose veins are examined, the best course of treatment will be prescribed. If you are a good candidate for endovenous ablation you will be asked about your medical history and if you are taking any prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, herbal supplements and if you have any allergies.

We may ask you to walk for a few minutes after the procedure and wear compression stockings for 15 days to keep the vein closed. Once the varicose vein has been treated, the symptoms of aching and itching that usually accompany varicose veins may be gone.

You no longer need to live with unsightly and uncomfortable varicose veins. They can hamper your fun during warm weather because you are embarrassed to wear a bathing suit or shorts. When you visit our expert, you can learn more about endovenous ablation and how it may help improve your appearance and lifestyle.
