Is Large Vein Sclerotherapy Safe?

The back of a man's legs in red shorts standing at the edge of the beach

Large vein sclerotherapy treatments consist of an injection of a sclerosant. This special chemical is injected directly into the varicose vein to scar and damage the lining causing the vein to close. During the treatment, the leg is elevated so the blood can drain. This safe procedure takes place in the office of a medical professional. The duration of the session is dependent on the number and size of the veins being treated. Once the injection has been given, the professional applies pressure to the varicose vein. This prevents the blood from returning when the individual stands. Compression stockings are often required for a period of time to maintain the pressure.

The large vein sclerotherapy treatments may require additional sessions with repeated injections. This depends on the type of sclerotherapy used, the extent of damage, and the size of the impacted vein. This is a cutting-edge, minimally invasive technique. The sclerosant is guided to the affected varicose vein with the assistance of a duplex ultrasound. This means the treatment is effective for the larger veins as well. In the past, these veins required surgery, litigation, and stripping. The larger veins could then be tied off prior to removal.

In most cases, large vein sclerotherapy does not require any recovery time. You should be able to walk as soon as the treatment is complete. You will need to use compression stockings for two to three weeks after the treatment has been completed. There are numerous different reasons a large vein sclerotherapy treatment may become necessary. In some cases the veins are small, are not causing any issues and do not need to be treated. The procedure becomes necessary:

  • When the smaller varicose veins have returned following a vein stripping surgery
  • When minimally invasive techniques are required to treat larger veins causing problems
  • As a follow up to certain types of surgeries
